Bogner stands as a testament to the fusion of fashion and function in the realm of luxury sports apparel. Founded in 1932 by Willy Bogner Sr. in Munich, Germany, the company initially focused on skis, equipment, and knitwear. However, it soon evolved into a leader in high-performance winter gear and ski fashion.

Early Innovations and the Dawn of a Brand
When Willy Bogner Sr. founded his sports apparel business in 1932 in a Munich warehouse, skiwear was driven by function, not fashion. A Nordic skiing champion and Olympian, Bogner Sr. broke new ground by marrying design with performance materials to create a luxury winter sportswear brand.
Maria Bogner, the creative force behind the company, played a pivotal role in shaping its identity. She ran Bogner while her husband was at war, and afterward, the two were at the helm together. In the early 1950s, Maria was on a quest to craft a comfortable, sexy pair of ski pants made from a nylon material. The result? With a pair of pants, Maria Bogner changed how women in the ski industry carried themselves.
The Iconic 'B' Zipper
In 1955, Maria Bogner replaced the pullers on the zips of BOGNER ski jackets with a distinctive ‘B’ - this invention made the company a pioneer in branding. Subsequently, the BOGNER ‘B’ developed a sometimes discreet, sometimes showy life of its own as a trademark on jackets, hats, sunglasses and even as a necklace pendant. James Bond wears it when skiing, German Olympic athletes at opening ceremonies. In 2002, almost 50 years after its introduction, this unmistakable logo even appeared in oversized format on the Brandenburg Gate.

Bogner Ski Fashion
After years of restoration work, the Berlin landmark that had been wrapped up in a massive fabric cover, was unveiled in a fashion befitting its status - and for the occasion, Willy Bogner Jr in person floated down in a helium balloon to open a giant ‘B’ logo zip.
The BOGNER Jacket: A Timeless Classic
Willy Bogner Interview - The Story of Bogner Ski Wear
1957 was the year space travel began - the first Sputnik satellite orbited the earth. That same year, Maria Bogner was to set new standards on the ski slopes. She developed her first interpretation of BOGNER’s classic down jacket, long before other brands discovered the style for themselves. To this day, “The BOGNER Jacket” is firmly anchored in the BOGNER DNA - and not only because it looks timelessly cool, but also because of its continuous technical development.
Originally intended as a ski jacket, it is now just as at home in the city as it is in the snow - a distinctive example of the typical BOGNER symbiosis of sport and fashion. This fusion was also evident at a legendary photo shoot in 2006 at Montparnasse in Paris, when the fur-trimmed down ski jackets met slim jeans and high-heeled boots from the Sônia Bogner collection. Expansion and Diversification
Willy Bogner Jr. took over the business in 1977. An elite sportsman like his father, on retiring from alpine skiing he pursued a career as filmmaker and cameraman. Over its 90-year history, BOGNER has demonstrated agility, responding to the demands of an increasingly technical sports sector through R&D into performance materials. At the same time, it has diversified into fashion apparel to extend sales beyond the ski season.

In the late 1960s, Willy Bogner, Jr., a former alpine ski racer and film director who worked on four James Bond films, introduced his first line with the company, featuring nylon materials and bold new looks.
Overcoming Challenges and Restructuring
However, the last decade has proved challenging for the family owned company. While BOGNER had retained a loyal customer base, it lagged behind luxury sportswear competitors that were innovating, investing in their stores and expanding globally. At the beginning of 2020 EY-Parthenon was mandated by BOGNER to help stabilize and reshape the business. This plan was central to BOGNER’s recovery.
“With a round of refinancing scheduled for the summer, the plan had to be robust to withstand the intense scrutiny it would receive from the financing parties,” says Andreas Porstner, Director, Turnaround and Restructuring, Ernst & Young GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft. The first year was focused on stabilizing the company, with revenue and cost management as the main priorities. Securing a refinancing package at this stage was crucial - with this in place the company would have financial stability and scope for future investment.
With the company on a more secure financial footing, the second year concentrated on reshaping the business. This involved the relocation of BOGNER’s Munich headquarters and reducing headcount, developing a new brand strategy and outsourcing logistics. With the first two phases completed, in the third year the company would be well-placed to push further into international markets, enhance its brand positioning and strengthen its online presence.
