Dog sledding is an exciting winter activity that allows participants to experience the thrill of mushing through snowy landscapes. However, ensuring the safety and well-being of both the passengers and the sled dogs is paramount. One of the most critical factors in maintaining safety is adhering to the weight limits for each sled.
Weight Limits and Safety
Careful limits are set to keep both guests and dogs safe and happy because they’re living beings (not machines). Strict weight limits are enforced to ensure the well-being of the sled dogs and the safety of the passengers.
Winter Sleds: The safety of the sled dogs is the first priority, therefor we strictly enforce the 2 person/350lbs weight limit per traditional sled as well as a 2 person/425lbs weight limit per extended team sled.
Rolling Dog Carts: The safety of the sled dogs is our first priority, therefor we strictly enforce the 600lbs weight limit per rolling cart.
It is important to note that refunds will not be issued if trail conditions require the use of rolling dog sleds.

Factors Affecting Weight Capacity
Several factors influence the weight capacity of a dog sled:
- Type of Sled: Different sled designs have varying weight capacities.
- Number of Dogs: The size and strength of the dog team determine how much weight they can safely pull.
- Trail Conditions: Icy or uneven trails can impact the amount of weight a sled can handle.
- Weather Conditions: Weather conditions also determine the weight.
Specific Guidelines and Examples
Here are some examples of weight restrictions implemented by dog sled tour operators:
- Each sled can carry up to 350 lbs of the passengers weight.
- Maximum Sled weight is 450 Lbs.
- The Individual Weight limit is 300 Lbs, and the company cannot take anyone over 300 lbs.
- If 2 Guests exceed the weight limit then you will need to purchase single occupancy sleds.
- If the combined weight of 2 guests exceeds 450 lbs, a single occupancy sled may be required, incurring an additional fee.
Tour Information and Requirements
To ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience, it's important to be aware of the following:
- Reservations are typically required and must be paid in full to guarantee the trip.
- Guests should arrive 10-15 minutes before their scheduled time.
- Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian on the tour.
- For parties booking multiple sleds, there must be a parent/guardian in one sled and someone ages 12+ in the others.
Additional Considerations
Dog sledding tour operators prioritize the well-being of their dogs. The dogs love what they do-running, pulling, and sharing the ride with you! For them, each outing is pure joy, not work.
If you’re not dressed accordingly for your tour, your musher reserves the right to cancel your adventure.

Weight Limits in Practice
That typically means two average size adults, or three children, or 1 adult and two kids per sled (Families can share the ride time).
If your group is above this limit, we’ll arrange either a second sled team or a “split tour” taking turns on the ride, so everyone enjoys the full experience.
Table of Weight Limits
| Sled Type | Weight Limit |
|---|---|
| Traditional Winter Sled | 350 lbs (for 2 persons) |
| Extended Team Sled | 425 lbs (for 2 persons) |
| Rolling Dog Cart | 600 lbs |
