Cunningham's Ski Barn: A Legacy in Skiing
Cunningham's Ski Barn (CSB) holds the distinction of being the oldest ski shop in North America. Its origins trace back to 1908 when P.J. Cunningham, a state district Forest Ranger, acquired a general store in North Creek, NY.
As skiing gained popularity, locals would visit the general store to have oak barrel staves transformed into skis with leather strap bindings. This marked the beginning of P.J.'s ski business. Soon, a dedicated section of the general store was established exclusively for ski equipment, giving birth to CSB.
By the 1930s, Butler Cunningham, P.J.'s son, took over the store. In 1932, Butler attended the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and, upon his return to North Creek, played a pivotal role in developing Gore Mountain into a renowned ski area. Butler also served as president of the Gore Mountain Lift Co.

Following Butler's tenure, his son, Patrick J. Cunningham, managed CSB for an impressive 50 years. Pat was a skilled ski racer and an Olympic hopeful, competing on the European circuit in the 1960s, which later evolved into the World Cup. Unfortunately, his Olympic aspirations were cut short due to a broken arm just before the trials.
Today, Tyler, Pat's son and a Burke Mountain Academy alumnus who continued his ski racing career at St. Lawrence University, owns and operates the stores.
