Peak and Peak Ski Resort: A History and Comprehensive Guide

Peek'n Peak Resort and Spa, a renowned ski resort in southwestern New York's Chautauqua County, boasts a rich history and a wide array of amenities. Situated in the snow belt, this resort has been a favorite destination for winter sports enthusiasts and vacationers alike since its opening in 1964.

Early Years and Development

Peek'n Peak opened in 1964, quickly establishing itself as a popular winter playground. The lodge, constructed in the Tudor architectural style, added to the resort's charm and appeal. Over the years, Peek'n Peak has expanded to include 27 skiing and snowboarding trails, along with a 36-hole golf course, making it a versatile destination for all seasons.

Financial Challenges and New Ownership

In 2006, Geauga County developer Paul Kiebler acquired the resort with ambitious plans for expansion, including a hotel expansion, an indoor water park, and new slopes and lifts. However, the economic downturn soon after led to financial difficulties, and Kiebler filed for bankruptcy in 2010. In 2011, the Scott family, with a strong background in the hospitality industry, purchased the resort for $11.3 million, investing an additional $5 million in its first year of ownership.

"We had an emotional attachment to it," said Scott, whose company portfolio includes dozens of restaurants and hotels, mostly in the Erie area, as well as the Splash Lagoon indoor water park. "In the 1970s and 1980s, we were skiing with the whole family at Peek'n Peak."

The new owners prioritized renovations, starting with replacing leaky roofs and remodeling hotel rooms. Nick Scott Jr., company vice president, noted that the rooms were completely gutted and rebuilt, featuring new bathrooms, granite counters, and updated amenities.

Recent Improvements and Additions

Since the acquisition by the Scott family, Peek'n Peak has undergone significant improvements. The new 720 Terrain Park, the resort's fourth, has been developed on the Greenwood Forest Trail, creating a haven for tricksters. Other additions include gas fire pits near the Inn at the Peak, providing a cozy spot for guests to relax.

The resort has also focused on enhancing its year-round appeal. Last year, Segway tours were introduced, the golf courses were upgraded with new carts and GPS systems, and a partnership with Aveda was established at the Serenity Spa.
