From their debut in the NHL's 1967 expansion, the St. Louis Blues quickly made their mark on professional hockey, establishing a tradition of competitive spirit and resilience. As the team carved out its identity, they reached the Stanley Cup Finals in their first three seasons, setting a high bar for future success. For a lot of Blues fans, there’s no better way to display their commitment to this world-class team than by wearing an authentic St. Louis Blues throwback jersey to the Center.
The Early Years (1967-1970s)
The St. Louis Blues got their start in 1967 as an expansion team, along with five other franchises that entered the NHL that year. The fledgling team made the Stanley Cup Finals in each of their first three seasons, but failed to win the championship on all three tries, losing to the Montreal Canadiens (1968 and 1969), and the Boston Bruins in 1970. Despite their early struggles in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Blues quickly built a passionate fan base and solidified their place in the NHL. Known for their hard-nosed style of play and resilience, the team continued to compete fiercely throughout the 1970s.
Thanks to modern-day travel, it becomes much easier for St. Louis to host an NHL franchise. More than 30 years following the demise fo the one-season wonder Eagles, the St. Louis Blues take to the ice wearing (appropriately) blue (and gold) jerseys.
Evolution of the Jersey Design
- 1967-68: The inaugural jerseys featured a simple yet classic design with blue and gold colors.
- 1968-73: The shoulder yoke becomes longer, extending down into the top of the sleeve.
- 1979-84: The Blues made several changes from 1974 to ’79, such as reversing the colors on the stripes and adding nameplates on the back, before landing on these in ’79.
The 1980s and 1990s: A Rollercoaster of Styles
Despite three division titles in the '80s, the Blues kept falling short in the playoffs. They had to wait until 2019 for their next appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals.
In 1984, a big departure from any previous uniforms was introduced and this particular color scheme is what they wore from 1985 to ’87, when red was added to the blue uniforms. The “BLUES” script came off the front of the jersey, and the Blue Note was enlarged. Over the next few seasons, the Note became more rounded, and the name plates also changed colors.

The most controversial change in the history of the Blues’ uniforms took place with the addition of the diagonal striping and red becoming much more prominent in the design.
The Blues moved into Kiel Center in 1994 and have played home games at that arena (now called Enterprise Center) ever since.
The Modern Era: A Return to Heritage
The big win in 2019 was especially sweet for long-suffering Blues fans, who had endured decades of close calls and near misses. The Blues are returning to their roots, taking inspiration from the beloved heritage kits for their new full-time home and away uniforms. The new jerseys are similar to the versions worn by the Blues in the home 2017 Winter Classic and away 2022 Winter Classic, with the most noteworthy difference being the new away jersey featuring white rather than cream. Key updates include one-color numbers for clear legibility and a new interlocking STL logo displayed on the pant leg.
The Blues are officially returning to their original palette for their primary colors-the classic blue and yellow first worn in 1967, but changed slightly to improve the color consistency between different fabrics on the uniform. The modernized version of the iconic Blue Note includes a move from three colors to two (beige removed from the previous heritage-style Note), thicker blue and yellow keylines, and a slight reshaping of the Note.
The Blues' new uniforms of 2025 were inspired by their Winter Classic uniforms of 2017 and 2022 (and, in effect, their inaugural uniforms), although they are not carbon copies of them. The Blues are retaining their former primary home uniform as their alternate for at least one more season, presumably so that they can clear out their old stock of their old retail home jerseys without discounting them.
