Mite Hockey Program

Mite Hockey is designed for skaters in Pre-K through 3rd grade, offering five levels to accommodate varying skill levels:

  • Mini Mite
  • Mite 1
  • Mite 2
  • Mite 3
  • Mite 4

Skaters in the Mini-Mite level do not need prior skating experience, making it an ideal starting point for beginners.

Note: Due to a new MN Hockey rule, Mites who do not live within the Orono School District may face restrictions in playing for Orono. However, some exceptions may apply.

Mite Team Structure

The program has moved to a more classic lineup to avoid geographic confusion. Here’s the new structure:

  • Mini Mites
  • Mite 1
  • Mite 2
  • Mite 3
  • Mite 4

If a player was on Mite 2W last year, they will likely be on Mite 2 again this season. It’s the same name but a higher level in the new structure.

Mite Level Evaluations

The evaluation process is fair, fun, and focused, with the goal of placing every skater where they can grow and shine. Here’s how evaluations work for each level:

  • Mini Mite (Pre-K/K): No evaluations are needed for players new to hockey. Placement is automatic.
  • Mite 1, Mite 2 (K-1st grade): Players attend a non-timed practice for evaluation. Parents can request to opt into timed evaluations for potential higher placement.
  • Mite 3 / Mite 4 (2nd-3rd grade): All players participate in timed, drill-based evaluations. No subjective scrimmages are used.

Goalie Evaluations

Players at the Mite 3 or Mite 4 level who wish to be evaluated as full-time goalies will attend a specific goalie evaluation.
