The area around Mammoth Lakes has served as a training ground for Olympic hopefuls. One notable athlete linked to the region is a Batesie who was the fifth ever selected for an Olympic team. She participated in athletics in lacrosse and cross country.

She came up short and set her dream aside for a while, beginning an eight-year run on the US Ski Team. She competed in the Winter Olympics in 1988 in Calgary and 1992 in Albertville.
Her journey began when Coach Bob Flynn encouraged her to try cross-country skiing. Despite having lungs and no technique, she won every race she entered. She was undefeated, and was our first skiing All-American. She was a fourteen times finisher in international races and finished in the 15K race at the World Championships in 1989.

Mammoth Lakes is home to a facility used by Olympic hopefuls. This facility trains young skiers year round. The area has been training skiers for over a decade at the Tamarack Cross Country Ski Center.
