If you're looking to learn how to ice skate in Orlando, or improve your existing skills, several options are available. Whether you're a complete beginner or an experienced figure skater, you can find a program that suits your needs. As an added bonus, spending an hour or two inside a frosty ice rink is a great way to beat the heat.
Learn to Skate Programs at Ice Den
The Ice Den at Genesis Orlando Sportsplex in Maitland offers a comprehensive Learn to Skate program suitable for all ages and skill levels. Here's what you need to know:
- Beginner Classes: If you're an ice skating newbie, consider checking out the Learn to Skate group classes offered at Ice Den at Genesis Orlando Sportsplex in Maitland. Participants meet once a week for a 30-minute class, followed by 15 minutes of supervised practice. Sessions are eight weeks long with achievement testing on the last day of class.
- Curriculum: Skaters earn achievement badges or certificates and advance through the ISI curriculum. The 2023-2024 annual membership with Ice Sports Industry (ISI) is included with registration.
What You'll Learn
The beginner class focuses on fun and safety. This beginner class focuses on fun and safety. Off the ice, students learn to properly tie and walk in their skates. On the ice, students learn to safely fall, stand independently, and begin forward skating and gliding. If you have never taken lessons before, we recommend that you take this class first.

Here are the upcoming sessions for all ages:
- Winter Learn to Skate Dates: REGISTRATION HAS CLOSED AS ALL CLASSES ARE FULL.
- Tuesday: January 9 - February 27
- Wednesday: January 10 - February 28
- Saturday: January 6-March 9 (No class 1/13 and 2/17)
Saturday 11:15am classes are for children 10 and under. Tuesday 6:00pm, Wednesday 6:00pm & Saturday 12:05pm classes are for all ages.

*Registration for the Spring session will open by January 26.
Learn to skate with your young child (toddlers ages 3-4). Basic beginner skills are taught to both participants. This class is only offered on Saturdays from 12:05-12:50pm. One registration for the child includes one parent.
Fees and Skate Rentals
The cost to learn to skate is $150 per participant for all 8 weeks. Skate rental is not included but can be purchased for $3.75 per class or $28 (tax not included) for the 8-week session. The skate rental punch card provides eight (8) skate rentals and is ideal for Learn to Skate participants. After purchase, your punch card can be picked up at the Ice Den Service Desk.

Advanced Skating Programs
The Sportsplex skating department caters to skaters of all ages and levels. We have classes and programs for those just entering the sport and for those that have skated for years. For experienced figure skaters, the freestyle sessions offer a chance for more dedicated practice and private lessons. Interested in skating with a team? Skill Development Classes
The Learn to Skate program includes classes designed to develop specific skating skills:

- Learn to Skate: Participants learn the art of gliding on both feet and then on each foot independently. Skaters are taught introductory edge moves known as swizzles and wiggles.
- Learn to Skate: Skaters learn forward stroking, crossovers and are introduced to skating in both clockwise and counterclockwise directions. Participants learn to stop by using the edges on their blades.
- Learn to Skate Beta: Skaters in the Beta class learn to skate backwards. Backward stroking and crossovers in both directions are the primary focus of the class. Participants are also introduced to another method of stopping with their blades.
- Learn to Skate Gamma: Skaters are taught intermediate skills such as forward outside three turns, mohawks and hockey stops! Skaters at this level can skate forward and backward, so the Gamma class concentrates on maneuvers that enable the skater to shift properly from forward to backward skating.
- Learn to Skate: This is a fun, performance based class, focusing on ice show and competition group numbers. Skaters will go through a simple audition before signing up for this program.
- Edges & Transitions: Only offered during the SUMMER, Edges & Transitions helps skaters maintain and improve their synchronized skating skills. Skaters should have passed at least Freestyle One, or currently a part of the Synchro Team before registration. This class is only offered during the summer.
