The New York Islanders joined the National Hockey League (NHL) in 1972, as part of the league's expansion. The team was established to represent Long Island, New York, and has since built a strong legacy, including four consecutive Stanley Cup championships in the early 1980s.
Guided by the expert hand of head coach (and future Hall of Famer) Al Arbour, the Islanders pulled off a truly legendary feat by winning four straight Stanley Cups over 1980-83. They also set an NHL record that still stands by winning 19 consecutive playoff series. The team lost only three games across four Stanley Cup Finals! It was an epic achievement, and the NHL officially recognizes the early ‘80s Islanders as one of the nine dynasty teams in league history.
The Original Logo and Jerseys
The original Islanders logo, introduced in 1972, is one of the most distinctive and recognizable designs in NHL history. 1972-73 New York's newest team debuted in 1972 wearing New York's official colors of blue and orange. Look carefully on the careful positioning of the word "Islanders" on the crest in relation to the image of Long Island.
The colors chosen for the logo-orange, blue, and white-were significant. Orange and blue are the colors of the New York state flag, while the white provides a clean contrast.

The team's first two seasons in the NHL involved the typical misery that expansion teams usually endure, but their fortunes soon changed. The Islanders started putting up wins, and by 1978 even ended up the regular season on top of the Campbell Conference.
Early Modifications
- 1973-76: The numbers underwent a slight change in the team's second season.
- 1976-77: The outer blue trim on the home crest disappears.
- 1978-84: The stripes on the away jerseys change again.
The Infamous "Fisherman" Logo
The Worst Jerseys in NHL History
In 1995, the Islanders introduced a new logo, commonly referred to as the “Fisherman” logo. This design featured a grizzled fisherman holding a hockey stick, with ocean waves and a lighthouse in the background.
The “Fisherman” logo was part of a broader rebranding effort intended to modernize the team’s image. However, it received mixed reactions from fans, many of whom were attached to the original design. The Gorton Fisherman jerseys hold a place in everyone’s mind because they were so wacky, but they weren’t actually good.
1995-97 In one of the most ill-fated moves in NHL uniform history, the Islanders ditched their trademark royal blue/orange uniforms in favor of a uniform set that a 1960s stoner would have been proud of. The crest was replaced by one featuring a man bearing a striking resemblance to the Gorton's fisherman. The backs of the jerseys featured names and numbers distorted to follow the contours of the bottom stripes.

Restoring the Original Design
- 1996-98: In part one of making things right with Islanders fans, the team placed the old logos on the new jerseys in the 1996-97 season. Those jerseys were rotated with the ones with the Gorton's fisherman crest for that season.
- 1998-2002: In part two of making things right with Islanders fans, the team returned to their original design in 1998, keeping navy blue as its primary color.
The Reebok Edge Era
2007-08 Apparently not learning its lesson from the previous decade, the Islanders introduce a new design when the reebok Edge uniform system takes over the NHL. The Reebok Edge system wasn’t too harsh to the Islanders.
2008-10 The Islanders use their original blue jersey as its new alternate uniform, complete with matching pants and hemlet. On the "Y" in the alternate's crest, there are now four stripes instead of three. The significance?
2010-11 It's truly back to the future with the Islanders as they change their road uniform to match their original design.
Alternate Uniforms and Special Editions
In 2011, the Islanders introduced an alternate third jersey logo. This design was a simplified, roundel version of the original logo, featuring the “NY” and the map of Long Island within a circular badge. This alternate logo added variety to the team’s branding while maintaining a strong connection to its heritage.
- 2011-14: Just as the city's other professional sports teams start to phase out black from their color schemes, the Islanders break out a new black alternate uniform, featuring the "beloved" wordmark-with-number-underneath front treatment.
- 2015-17: The Islanders try again with a black alternate uniform -- this one in honor of their inaugural season in Brooklyn. It comes complete with four stripes on the sleeves and on the socks.
- 2014 Stadium Series: The Islanders wore these uniforms as they lost to the Rangers, 2-1, at Yankee Stadium on January 29, 2014. Not only were the Islanders the losers of the four Stadium Series jerseys in 2024, but they may be among the worst jerseys of all time.
- 2021 Reverse Retro: In easily the laziest Reverse Retro treatment, the Islanders take their 1979-80 home uniform, reverse the white and blue parts and darken the blue to the shade they wore in the late 1990s/early 2000s. The Reverse Retro with the most boring idea goes to… The orange and white stripes switch places and the darker blue returns. By Islanders jersey standards, these are pretty decent, despite the lack of effort into the RR gimmick.
- 2022-23 Reverse Retro: The Islanders attempt to re-create their fisherman uniform from 1995, eliminating teal from the color palette. The reimagining of the original Fisherman jersey may not bear a ton of resemblance to the originals, but that’s probably for the better. The Gorton’s crest returns and the color palette is dulled down and the striping a little less wacky left behind a perfectly fine homage to a polarizing classic.
The Modern Era
2017-18, 2024-present The Islanders retire their black alternates and carry over their primary designs to the new Adidas Adizero jersey system.

2018-24 The Islanders introduce a new blue alternate uniform, featuring an NY crest with four diagonal lines for the stick tape.
