When you’re ready to make your way to Steamboat Springs and hit the slopes, getting here is easier than you might imagine. For as far away as Steamboat feels, we’re honestly one of the easier ski resorts to get to. Many wintertime travelers opt to fly into the Yampa Valley Regional Airport which is conveniently located just 22 miles from Steamboat Springs.

The Yampa Valley Regional Airport, known locally as Hayden (HDN) is located just 22 miles from the ski mountain and offers nonstop flights to Steamboat from 17 major airports in the winter months. Where to Stay

Find the perfect place to stay during your trip to Steamboat Springs. Do you want to be pampered? Or are you looking to stay as economical as possible? Whatever you’re after, you’ll find it in Steamboat, from four star hotels, to downtown condos and townhomes, to affordable motels, we’ve got it all.

This area is huge, so there are a ton of options, and it's surprisingly more affordable than some of the other ski towns. So I stay in the ski-in and ski-out VRBOs near the gondola because it saves time; the lines get really long for first chair, so if you wait a little bit, they'll die down. I'd recommend this one for a large group without dogs, this large pet-friendly one, or this hotel for a smaller group. There's also a marriot, which is always a good option if you have points. Many hotels or Airbnb's might be close to the shuttle to the ski resort, check before you go if you're not staying at a ski in / ski out resort.

Edgemont Steamboat Springs: We booked the Edgemont Steamboat Springs right on the slope (Stampede). This was recommended as the most comparable resort to One Ski Hill Place where we stayed in Breckenridge. They have a great ski locker area, an outdoor heated pool and two hot tubs. It is truly slope side and just a short ski down to the gondola in the base area. We rented a 1 bedroom condo that featured a fully appointed kitchen complete with wine fridge, 2 full bathrooms and two fireplaces. The adults had a comfy king sized bed and the pull out queen sofa suited the boys just fine.

Note: April 1, 2022 to November 1, 2022, Edgemont Condominiums will be undergoing a construction project to replace the exterior stone veneer. Please be advised, Edgemont guests may experience noise, obstructed views, amenity closures, and detours around the building.

When it comes to packing, you’re going to want to make sure you have quality snow gear on hand for the journey including waterproof apparel, goggles, gloves, and boot and hand warmers. It’s important to bring sunscreen for your ski getaway as the sun reflecting off the snow can be just as impactful as summertime sunshine for those spending time outdoors.

Work with the best instructors in the business and take your skiing or riding to the next level with Steamboat SnowSports School. Our pros develop relationships that go beyond just lessons and often last for generations. Discover the joy of skiing at Steamboat Resort with lessons tailored for every age and ability, from first-timers to seasoned skiers and riders.

For Beginners

If you’ve never skied before and you’re excited to learn for the very first time, Steamboat Ski Resort is an idyllic place for your first lesson and on-the-slopes experience. Not only is the resort beautiful but it’s staffed with talented instructors who are excited to help you master the basics so you can eventually hit all the best runs.

If you’ve taken a lesson or two in the past but haven’t skied in a long while, it’s best to focus your sights on Preview at the base area of the mountain. This is a great place to gain your confidence, regain your balance, and hone the skills you already have before heading for more challenging runs if you don’t plan on taking lessons. The “Why Not” trail is a great first run for beginners who aren’t taking lessons to try out.

Steamboat Ski Resort is great for beginners because it offers up versatile and adventurous terrain to explore. Beginner trails here are also spread out across the resort, so you can change up the view, and if you’re in a group, skiers of all skill levels can enjoy new experiences in different areas together. The wide and gentle slopes for beginners are terrific for trying something new whether you’re learning to make a wedge, turn, ride the chair lift, or come to a successful stop. In total, around 14% of the mountain terrain here is dedicated to beginner-level runs, and the Thunderhead Express and Burgess Creek Lifts are both convenient for accessing the majority. Some of the top green-level trails to check out here include Sundial to Broadway and Right-O-Way. Of course, before you head out on your own, lessons through the Steamboat Ski School are a must. Learn to ski at Greenhorn Ranch, our dedicated learning center.

For Intermediate Skiers

For skiers with a bit more experience who would consider themselves intermediate level, Steamboat Ski Resort has just as many options for thrilling fun when the fresh powder falls. Over 40% of the terrain at the resort is considered suitable for skiers at this level which means there’s a lot to check out and explore! Some of the very best intermediate terrain is located just off the Sunshine Express Lift. The ridgeline along Tomahawk to Baby Powder is a must try when you’re looking forward to sensational views. If you’re up for a bit of a challenge, the Bar-Ue Lift and Pony Express Lift are where to set your sights. These will take you to places like Buddy’s Run, Longhorn, and Chaps, which are considered advanced intermediate runs. If you know what you’re doing on the snow but could use a refresher or want to advance your skillset, booking a place in a Steamboat Ski Resort ski camp is a good idea.

For Expert Skiers

Ski enthusiasts who make their way to the mountains year after year and are confident and ready for the next challenge will love the advanced runs that await at Steamboat Ski Resort. Around 44% of the terrain is dedicated to expert-level trails and runs, so there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy. Once you arrive, be sure to start over at the Sundown Express, where you have options to access expert trails like the Three O’Clock, the Sundown Liftline, and Kuu’s Cruise. Twilight is a must for zipping through the glades, while the trails off Storm Peak Express are equally enjoyable. Once you’ve covered the front side of the mountain, make your way over the ridge towards Morningside Park. Bowl-like skiing is at its best in this area which hosts scattered trees and access to Wake Up Call. Other top stops to add to your expert-level day of skiing include Chutes 1-3 along the ridgeline at Christmas Tree Bowl as well as Storm Peak North and South.

Beyond Downhill Skiing

Howelsen Hill Ski Area

When you’re looking forward to adding as many stops as possible to your ski itinerary in Steamboat Springs, you won’t want to overlook time well spent at the Howelsen Hill Ski Area in town. This was Steamboat Springs’ original ski area which opened in 1915 thanks to the work of Norwegian ski jumper Carl Howelsen. Today, it’s still a popular and intimate ski area to enjoy for those who are looking to enhance their skill set. There’s something special about making the most of an afternoon on the fresh powder in a historic ski setting where you can ski, tub, and spend time with family and friends.

Cross-Country Skiing

If you want to slow things down a bit, consider adding cross-country skiing to your ski getaway in Steamboat Springs. This is another popular activity in the area when winter comes around and renting skis is easy right at the resort.

Other Activities in Steamboat Springs

This is one of the few places in Colorado that offers night skiing. Though I personally wouldn't recommend it if you don't like the cold! I went one year and only lasted a few runs due to freezing temperatures (I'm talking about literal 2 degrees Fahrenheit...) The views of the town lit up, though, were so beautiful.

Night Skiing in Steamboat Springs

Strawberry Park Hot Springs

Every amazing ski getaway to Steamboat Springs deserves to be followed up with a warm and relaxing dip in the town’s natural hot springs. Head over to Old Town Hot Springs downtown when you want to pick and choose from eight mineral-rich pools on-site.

Strawberry park hot springs is one of my favorite hot springs to visit in Colorado! This is a MUST visit when you're in town; it's a short drive or shuttle ride from town (they do not allow Uber or Lyft entry for some reason). You need AWD to reach the resort in the winter because the road often gets heavy snow too (it makes it so beautiful and a literal winter wonderland, so it's worth it!). There aren't a ton of spa amenities (my favorite is the Scandanavie spa in Whistler Canada), but it's still really enjoyable for the price.

Be aware that it turns into a clothing-optional after the sun sets, so if you're not comfortable with that, then plan to book before sunset after your ski day. You can make a pool reservation 25-30 days in advance, so set a reminder and don't forget, as they can fill up. I have never had an issue making a reservation here, and I've gotten them closer to the day a few times during less popular times. Also, they are CASH only ($20), which is something I always need to prepare for. The earlier slots (2 pm ish) are usually available at the last minute, whereas the later slots (4 pm and onwards) sell out more quickly since people love to go after a full day of skiing.

Other Activities

  • Sleigh Ride: For Valentine's Day weekend, my boyfriend and I took a romantic sleigh ride through the snow at night and to a cozy cabin. It was very cold at night here, but they provide large warm blankets for the ride!
  • Cozy Meal: Have a cozy meal at one of the restaurants in the town! No better way to warm up than to fill your stomach with some delicious pasta!
  • Hiking near Fish Creek Falls: Fish Creek Falls is a great dog-friendly hike near the town. It's short, but sometimes the waterfall can freeze over. There's also a calming river that flows under the bridge by the falls, so as you're walking through this winter wonderland, you can be fully immersed in nature. I love taking a little adrenaline break from the slopes and then coming here with my dog to unwind. This is the most popular hike around the area. I always come here with my dog when I'm visiting; it's guaranteed to have lots of fluffy snow and a beautiful flowing river that may or may not be frozen.

Create lasting memories this winter with unique dining experiences that go beyond the ordinary.
