Jake Marotta: A Dual-Sport Athlete's Journey

Jacob Marotta, born on Aug. 21, 1994, is the son of Nancy and Gary Marotta and has two brothers, Nick and Sam. Marotta has shown prowess in both baseball and hockey throughout his athletic career.

Early Baseball Career

Before attending Bryant University, Marotta was a two-year varsity letter winner at BC High, where he helped the Eagles secure a Catholic Conference championship in 2012. As the starting shortstop for the Eagles, Marotta boasted impressive stats, hitting .345 with a .435 on-base percentage and a .517 slugging percentage.

In the summer, Marotta was a member of the North East Rays team that finished 16th out of 236 teams at the East Cobb (Ga.) World Wood Bat Classic. He was also selected to play in the Summer Rivalry Classic, earning a spot on the all-tournament team as an all-star hitter and played for the North East Mudhens in the summer of 2013.

Freshman Year

In his first season with the Bulldogs, Marotta saw time at both short and third base. He appeared in 23 games, making five starts and posted an .852 fielding percentage. Marotta went 1-for-15 with three runs scored and two stolen bases. He made his collegiate debut as a defensive replacement against Maryland on Feb. 23 and earned his first-career start the following weekend at USC Upstate. On Mar. 2, he picked up his first collegiate hit and scored a run against the Spartans. He stole his first base of the season on Apr. 6 against Stony Brook and scored a run against CCSU and Wagner.

Sophomore Year

Marotta played a key role for the Bulldogs during his sophomore year, making 17 starts at shortstop during the early part of the season. Overall, he appeared in 26 games. He went 5-for-48 at the plate with an RBI and six runs scored. Leading the team with eight sac bunts, he committed just seven errors in 90 chances for a .922 fielding percentage. On Feb. 27, he went 1-for-3 with a run scored at Liberty. Marotta walked three times in a win over Towson and scored the tying run in a walk-off victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on May 8. Unfortunately, an injury sidelined him for the final month of the season.

Junior Year

In 2016, Marotta appeared in 35 games off the bench for the Bulldogs and served as Bryant's primary option off the bench late in the game for defensive purposes. At the plate, he went 4-for-22 with four walks and fielded at a .878 clip. In Bryant's win over No. 22 Kentucky, he walked, stole a base, and scored a run. He posted his first-career multi-hit game on Mar. 18 at Central Connecticut and drove in two with his first-career double on May 8 at LIU Brooklyn.

Senior Year

As a senior, Marotta took over as Bryant's everyday third baseman and had the most productive season of his career. He appeared in and started 52 of a possible 55 games and all numbers were career highs. Marotta hit .246 (44-179) with 13 doubles, 23 RBI and 16 runs scored. He doubled in back-to-back games against Arkansas and had a two-out, two-run game-tying single in the ninth at Hartford on Mar. 21. On Apr. 2, he had two hits, a double and an RBI vs. Sacred Heart. Marotta doubled twice in the same inning in Bryant's win over No. 25 UConn and had a game-winning two-run double in the eighth against LIU Brooklyn on Easter Sunday. Also, he drove in three runs at CCSU on Apr. 23 and drove in three runs vs. Mount on May 6. Marotta walked and scored a run against Wagner in the NEC Tournament.

Hockey Career

Marotta also excelled in hockey. He won the state championship with the Tier I GBL Boston Junior Bruins.
